Sugar Quota Regime April 18, 2013 12:00 am MEPs have voted to extend the sugar quota regime until 2020. But DEFRA has called for the Commission to end sugar quotas by 2015 as planned. Owen Paterson has described them as ‘bad for business and bad for consumers’ saying the UK is well placed to compete on the open market. The NFU had described the decision by MEPs to extend the regime as a significant step forward and has expressed its anger over DEFRA’s stance to try and end them in 2015. France is the largest sugar beet producer in Europe and is keen to extend the quota regime.
