Scottish Pollution Rules

July 15, 2013 12:00 am

Farmers in Scotland have had to abide by a new set of environmental rules as from 1st July.  Revision to the General Binding Rules (GBR) under the Controlled Activities Regulations mean that additional restrictions on the use and storage of fertilisers and pesticides now apply.  Other rules relate to the cultivation of land near watercourses and the use of livestock feeders.  The regulations are designed to prevent diffuse pollution from agriculture affecting water quality.  The Scottish Government, NFUS, SRUC and SEPA are working on a ‘plain English’ guide setting out the scope of the GBRs.  This should be available later in the year.
