The ‘Future of Scottish Agriculture- a discussion document’ has been published (http://www.gov.scot/Resource/0047/00479616.pdf). The document looks at the key opportunities and challenges that will be faced by the agricultural industry and describes the vision and desired outcomes whilst inviting the public and stakeholders to engage with the process. Key outcomes are;

  • strong, sustainable growth in profits from agriculture through increase market orientation, competitiveness and resource efficiency
  • more resilient to shocks and future challenges
  • high level of training, skill and eduction
  • embrace innovation and best practice, underpinned by Scottish research institutes
  • be a world leader in green farming
  • attract new entrants with a number of paths to entry
  • make a valued contribution to society
  • play a leading role on key issues affecting agriculture

Despite a number of ‘next steps’ identified the document does not give details on how it will reach its outcomes. ‘Next steps’ includes increase efficiency and market focus and increase collaboration between farmers. The focus seems to be on what should be done but not how it can be achieved, perhaps this is where they need the guidance from the public and stakeholders to engage.
