Latest financial results from the supermarket Sainsbury reveals it is currently the best performing major supermarket.  According to the market research firm Nielsen, it has taken back its number two spot ahead of Asda for share of consumer spending.  Tesco remains number one in the UK grocery market.  As previous reports have said, consumers are turning away from the big four supermarkets in preference of discounters such as Aldi and Lidl, but Sainsbury seems to be bucking the trend.  Statutory pre tax profits for the six months to end of September are up 9.1% to £433m compared to the same period in 2012.  This is also the first time since 2006 that the retailer has recorded statutory profits ahead of rival Morrisons who reported half yearly profits of £344m.  The retailer’s own brand ranges ‘By Sainsbury’s’ and ‘Taste the Difference’ are cited as the main reasons for its growth, together with is online service and convenience stores.
