Renewable Heat Incentive

July 8, 2013 12:00 am

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) was introduced in November 2011.  As we wrote in our April Bulletin, the domestic element has been repeatedly delayed and is now not due to commence until spring 2014.  Therefore, only commercial installations can currently receive support.  This is very much like Feed-in Tariffs in the electricity sector – a payment is made for each unit of heat generated from renewable sources.  Ofgem has realsed a report on the first 18 month’s operation of the RHI.  From November 2011 to March 2013 the scheme has:-

  • supported 1,984 applicants and accredited 1,238 installations
  • accredited 266MW of capacity (80% in England, 15.5% Scotland, 4.5% Wales)
  • paid £7.62m to accredited participants
  • generated 167,816,340 kWhth (Kilowatt hours thermal) from it’s accredited installations
