Twenty eight new cereal and oilseed rape varieties have been added to the 2015/16 HGCA Recommended lists.

For winter wheat six new varieties have been seen across all four Nabim groups, five varieties have been removed.  KWS Trinity joins Nabim Group 1 with a provisional recommendation a decision on full approval will be undertaken in April, yields are similar to that of last years new addition Skyfall.

This year the first high-oleic, low-linoleic (HOLL) variety, V316OL (Monsanto) tops the oilseed rape gross output list.  The variety meets food industry requirements (commanding a premium) but is also suited to the general market if contract specification is not reached. With this new variety the proportion of HOLL grown could increase from its current share of around 5% of the drilled area.

The spring barley category sees seven new varieties, six of which are being tested for malt and distilling end uses. Two spring oat varieties have been added, Aspen and Montrose. There were no new additions to the spring wheat list due to limited data being available. The full details are available from: http://www.hgca.com/varieties.aspx
