Pig Producers Break Even

Latest figures from AHDB/BPEX show pig producers are (at long last) just about breaking even; but it has taken record prices to reach this level.  Costs of production for May are estimated to be 164p per kg deadweight.  The EU-spec DAPP, which has been rising steadily over the last 12 weeks, was 164.39p per kg deadweight for the week ending 25th May – its highest-ever value.  However, as the gap between the EU reference price, which was 139.09p per kg deadweight for the same week and the UK DAPP price widens it is difficult to see prices continuing to rise at the same pace.  At present though, demand for British assured pork is reported to be remaining strong – a good barbeque summer would help further!

Looking ahead, production costs are forecast to drop over the remainder of the year, but this is dependent on the price of feed easing, which in the current volatile climate carries a lot of uncertainty and is dependent on the weather and the 2013 global harvest.
