Pest Hits WOSR Crop

October 24, 2014 12:00 am

An HGCA Assessment of the oilseed rape area has found that damage from the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle (CSFB) has contributed to the loss of 2.7% of the winter crop, this equates to around 18,000Ha.  This is an overall figure and masks large regional variations.

Most crop losses have been reported in the South East and the Eastern Counties.  It appears earlier drilled crops have been less susceptible.  Another cause of the variation in damage could be due to resistance to Pyrethroid insecticides and in the absence of neonicotinoid  seed treatments, control is reliant on the use of foliar sprays of Pyrethroids.  The recent Emergency Authorisation, until 23rd January 2015 of InSyst (neonicotinoid acetamiprid) will be of assistance, although only one autumn foliar application is permitted.
