LEADER Launched

The LEADER programme in England got its official launch on the 14th October with £138m funding available to create more jobs and boost the rural economy.  Grants will be awarded through each of the 80 Local Action Groups (LAGs) who have all been allocated their proportion of the £138m.  Applications are competitive and all projects must support one of the following priorities;

  • support for micro and small businesses and farm diversification
  • boosting rural tourism
  • increasing farm productivity
  • increasing forestry productivity
  • providing rural services
  • providing cultural and heritage activities

The priorities of jobs and growing the rural economy seem somewhat similar to that of the Growth Programme although is perhaps more flexible on what will be funded.  Although some of the LAGs seem well established and ready to launch their application process, a number are ‘lagging’ behind.  The system is much more local-led and more supportive than perhaps other scheme under the RDPE.  It really is a question of making contact with the local LAG and see what they are offering.  Around 85% of England is covered under a Local Action Group. Details of the LAGS are available at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rural-development-programme-for-england-leader-funding
