Including rough grazing, the land used for agriculture covers 84% of the total land area of Wales. The milking herd remained at around 223,000 animals whilst the beef breeding herd fell by 5%. Beef females under 1 year also saw a decrease (7.9%) in the year to June 2013. The number of workers on farms fell by 9% to around 53,000. The total number of employed workers fell by 2.3% to June 2013 and stands at 13,000. This was caused by a a fall in the number of casual workers employed on the survey day, the number of regular workers showed a small increase (0.7%).
