Increase in GM Area January 29, 2015 12:00 am Latest figures from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) show that the global area planted to genetically modified crops rose 3.5% in 2014 to 181.5m hectares. The crop technology is used in 28 countries (one more than in 2013) and 600,000 more farmers planted GM crops during the year, taking the total to 18 million farmers. In the EU the area grown has fallen by around 3% compared to 2013. Spain again tops the table with 31.6% of maize grown being a GM variety.
