French Schmallenberg Vaccine August 23, 2013 12:00 am The new Schmallenberg vaccine, developed by animal health company Merial, has been granted approval in France. The vaccine, SBVvax, has been granted authorization in the country ‘under exceptional circumstances’. The vaccine is also under review in the UK by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. Between September 2011 and April 2013 there have been more than 8,000 farms with confirmed cases SBV in Europe. According to the AHVLA, about 2,000 cases of Schmallenberg virus have been confirmed on farms in the UK, however it is not a notifiable disease and actual case numbers could be significantly higher. If this new vaccine is approved for use in the UK it would provide an alternative to the existing MSD Animal Health Vaccine, which has been available from this summer.
