Pasture Coaching Enquire Now Good pasture has always been the backbone of profitable livestock farming. Whether you’re running a lowland beef herd, upland sheep, or a mixed grazing enterprise, the condition and management of your grassland directly affects your bottom line. Yet with rising input costs and increasing scrutiny on land use as well as emissions from farming, there’s never been a more important time to fine-tune how pasture is managed. That’s where pasture coaching comes in, not as a passing trend or fad, but as a practical, hands-on approach to getting more from what you already have. What Is Pasture Coaching? Pasture coaching is a tailored, farm-by-farm approach that helps livestock farmers improve the productivity, resilience, and sustainability of their grassland. It typically involves: On-farm guidance: walking fields, assessing sward health, soil condition, and grazing patterns Practical adjustments: to grazing management, rest periods, and stock movement Proven tools: to measure grass growth, utilisation, and regrowth Planning support: to align grass supply with livestock demand over the season and to make contingencies for more extreme weather conditions. It’s not about turning every field into a scientific trial. It’s about making the most of what you’ve got, in a way that suits your system, your land, and your stock. Why It Matters Fertiliser prices, feed bills, and market pressures have made the case clear: if you can grow more grass and make better use of it, you can save money, improve margins, and maintain healthy stock without extra cost. Pasture coaching helps you: Lengthen the grazing season, reducing reliance on bought-in feed Improve pasture quality and longevity through better rest and recovery Increase liveweight gain from grass alone Identify problem areas early, such as soil compaction, poor drainage, or weed encroachment Reduce environmental impact, in line with support scheme goals and supply-chain initiatives to reduce emissions. There’s nothing modern about walking a field and watching how stock graze. What’s changed is the ability to use that knowledge more systematically, with support from experienced pasture coaches who understand both the science and the seasonality of British farming. Many of the core principles such as rotational grazing, rest periods, watching soil health, have been around for generations. The aim is not to change your farming style, but to help it to work better in today’s conditions. What It Looks Like in Practice Fertiliser prices, feed bills, and market pressures have made the case clear: if you can grow more grass and make better use of it, you can save money, improve margins, and maintain healthy stock without extra cost. There’s nothing modern about walking a field and watching how stock graze. What’s changed is the ability to use that knowledge more systematically, with support from experienced pasture Pasture coaching might start with: A visit during key grazing months to walk the fields with you A review of stocking rates and grazing rotation Recommendations based on your goals (more days at grass, improved lamb weight, reduced fertiliser) Ongoing check-ins or seasonal reviews Pasture coaching is about working smarter with your grass, not harder. It’s a chance to put the knowledge and instincts you already have into a structured plan that supports your business, without losing touch with your land management approach. If managed well, pasture can be your cheapest and most reliable feed source. Pasture coaching helps ensure it stays that way, not just for this season, but for the next generation.
