Carbon Footprint Assessments

Sustainability is becoming increasingly central to running a successful farm. The Andersons Centre understands that sustainability in farming must make sense not just for the environment, but for the farm business as a whole. That is why we offer carbon footprint assessments that help you understand the impact of your farming activities on the environment, while also identifying practical steps that can improve both productivity and profitability.

Our service is built around the practical needs of UK farmers. We understand the challenges you face and can tailor our approach to suit your business and enterprise mix. By assessing your farm’s carbon footprint, we help identify where emissions can be reduced and where improvements can be made to support both environmental and economic performance.

A Practical, Farm-Focused Process

Our process is simple, straightforward, and uses the following steps:

  1. Farm Assessment

We begin with an assessment of your farm to collect the information needed. This is usually done in-person, but can also be undertaken online in some circumstances. The assessment includes collecting details about land use and cropping, livestock numbers and management, feeding and husbandry practices, as well as energy and water usage. The assessment takes around two hours and requires some preparation in advance. Our team will guide you on what is needed ahead of time.

  1. Carbon Footprint Analysis

We enter your data into the most appropriate carbon footprinting tool for your farm. This may include Agrecalc or the Farm Carbon Toolkit. The analysis covers both direct and indirect emissions and can also include a review of soil carbon sequestration where relevant.

  1. Assessment Reports

You will receive a summary report outlining your farm’s emissions and, where available, comparisons to industry averages for your type of enterprise. The report will include practical ‘quick-win’ actions to help improve both environmental and productive performance. A detailed report is also provided, breaking down emissions by enterprise, input type (such as fuel or fertiliser), and greenhouse gas (CO₂, methane, and nitrous oxide).

  1. Feedback Session

Once you have had time to review the reports, we will arrange a call to go through the results with you. We explain what the findings mean in plain terms and discuss the recommended next steps that are realistic and relevant to your farm.

 Linking to Wider Business Goals

Alongside the carbon assessment, we also offer an optional Farm Business Review. This goes beyond immediate emissions and looks at longer-term changes that could improve your business performance and sustainability. The review considers the financial impact of any suggested changes and helps ensure that actions are aligned with your goals.

Experience You Can Trust

Our team combines expertise in farm business consultancy with practical experience of conducting carbon assessments. We are focused on helping you make informed decisions that are right for your farm. Our aim is to reduce environmental impact while supporting profitability and long-term resilience.

Testimonials

"PRISM demonstrates how beef farming can work in tandem with the environment, and provides a benchmark for how British beef and lamb compares to the rest of the world."
Mike Powley – Farmer – Yorkshire
"By getting involved in PRISM, they gave me some good pointers. We have introduced rotational grazing. This has made a huge difference, more than I ever thought it would do. We are using less fertiliser on that ground and keeping 20-25% more stock on those fields. That is a big saving."
Gordon Tomley – Farmer – Shropshire
