However, the trend may be slowing as dairy cattle numbers between 1 and 2 years have fallen, albeit by only 0.1%. Beef breeding herd numbers have fallen yet again, a consistent trend seen over the past decade. The breeding sheep flock has increased once again by 3.0%. This is perhaps surprising after the lacklustre prices seen for the 2014 season. Breeding pig numbers have fallen for the second year in a row. Gilts in pig and gilts intended for first time breeding have also fallen by 3.7% and 1.3% respectively. Fattening pig numbers have increased by 3.5% to over 4 million head. The reducing number of breeding pig yet the rising number of fattening pigs shows the increasing productivity levels.
