Dairy Industry Strategy

December 19, 2013 12:00 am

The NFU, Dairy UK and AHDB DairyCo have presented a draft dairy industry strategy to the Government. “Leading The Way” aims to eliminate the UK dairy trade deficit value by 2025. The three organisations involved want to encourage a growing and thriving industry through this strategy. The strategy is based around the three pillars of sustainability and have action plans for each one.

Economic

  • Increase Britain’s share of domestic and international markets.
  • Improve competitiveness and exploit market opportunities.
  • Build a supply chain relationships based on trust, collaboration and partnership.

Social

  • Produce safe and nutritious food.
  • Improve animal health and welfare standards.
  • Communicate a positive image of the industry to the public.

Environmental

  • Strive for sustainable use of natural resources and reduce the environmental footprint.
  • Enhance biodiversity and the social and amenity value of the landscape.

The strategy appears ambitious and will require a somewhat isolated industry to become more open to working together. It therefore needs industry-wide buy-in. Curiously however, the document does not appear to be available to download.
