Dairy Closure

April 18, 2013 12:00 am

The Saputo dairy in Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire is to close.  The facility which is Canadian-owned produces mozzarella cheese for the food service industry.  According to the owners, difficulty in competing in the market is the main reason for the closure.  Around 80 farmers have a direct supply contract with the dairy, but with the current recruitment drive from Muller Wiseman (see above), Dairy Crest and South Caernarfon the affected farmers should find a home for their milk.  However, suppliers need to consider any new contracts and make sure it suits their system; a liquid milk contract is going to require changes.
