Food processor Cranswick is moving back into pig production after purchasing East Anglian Pigs from the Bowes family.  The processor quit primary pig farming back in 2005 but, according to chief executive Adam Couch, the driving force behind the acquisition is the need to secure supplies and shorten the supply chain.  The latter being a hot topic in the wake of the horsemeat scandal.  East Anglian Pigs currently supplies in the region of 10-15% of Cranswick’s pig throughput.  The mainly outdoor herd is estimated to run 8,500 sows.
