Boost for Beet Price

October 6, 2016 12:00 am

Beet growers will receive a higher price than initially thought on the crop just about to be harvested.  The agreement between the NFU and British Sugar originally envisaged a price of £20.30 for in-quota beet.  However, because of the fall in the value of the Pound, this figure is now below the minimum EU beet price, when converted into Sterling.  Growers will therefore receive £1.32 per tonne extra with an actual price of £21.62 per adjusted tonne.  This applies to both CTE and industrial ‘ICE’ beet.

The tricky growing conditions during 2016 means that average yields are unlikely to be spectacular.  With a lower planted area, it is forecast that much of any surplus beet (‘C’ beet) delivered will actually be used to meet the national quota.  This means that surplus beet is also likely to receive a price close to £21.62.
