Big Beet Harvest

September 5, 2014 12:00 am

The 2014 sugar beet harvest is getting underway shortly, with a record crop predicted.  The Wissington and Newark factories open on the 12th September, with Bury and Cantley following a few days afterwards.  The crop is looking good, and the 2014 crop could deliver a record yield.  Unlike other cropping sectors, high yields will also translate into good returns.  The CTE price for this year is £31.67 per tonne.  This is the highest for a decade and was set when prices for competing combinable crops were at much higher levels than they now are.  With high yields and high prices the profit from the 2014 crop looks set to be good for most growers.  But with falls for both the price and contracted areas for 2015, it may be a short-lived high point.
